Aug 13, 2009, 10 Must-Have Organic/ Natural Products

Thanks to increasing consumer demand, organic and natural skin care products have improved by leaps and bounds over the past few years. Though chemical ingredients are very effective and sometimes necessary to treat certain conditions, I try to choose products made with organic and natural ingredients when I can because doing so encourages major manufacturers to reformulate their products to be less harmful to our environment. Plus, many of them work great! Here are 10 products that I have recently discovered:

For the female half of the population, it may bring a satisfied smile. Scientists have found that evolution is driving women to become ever more beautiful, while men remain as aesthetically unappealing as their caveman ancestors. Those daughters, once adult, also tend to be attractive and so repeat the pattern.

Jul 11, 2009, Do Organic Sunscreens Work?

In my opinion, there is really no such thing as organic sunscreen. To be truly, 100 percent organic, every single ingredient would have to be grown according to strict organic food laws. But there are many sunscreens on the market that contain organic ingredients and omit commonly used chemicals like parabens and phthalates. Organic sunscreens also use physical sunblocking ingredients, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, instead of chemical ingredients like mexoryl, avobenzone and octinoxate.

Jul 5, 2009, Does Your Skin Need To Detox?

A while back, a patient who had been receiving Botox treatments came to me with a worried look on her face. She had just started using a detoxifying skin cream and was concerned it would make the botox, which contains botulinum toxin, wear off faster. Devotees of detox diets and spa treatments have long insisted that fasting or slathering yourself with mud and mineral salts can remove chemicals, pollutants and other vague impurities from the body. Now beauty companies have jumped on the bandwagon, claiming that their products also have detoxifying benefits. My patient needn't have been concerned. I do not know of any product on earth that can suck toxins out of the skin.

May 13, 2009, Is high priced skincare worth it?

Everyone is more economically conscious these days. But just because Wall Street has a bad image doesn't mean yours should suffer, too. You can still take care of your skin without a stimulus package because the best products do not automatically come with inflated price tags. With so much riding on the moisturizers, serums, creams and potions we use to protect our skin, the instinct to spare no expense is well intentioned. But my patients usually need some convincing that drugstore brands can actually be just as effective as expensive options when they ask me for advice. Even Consumer Reports famously discovered that there is no need to empty your wallet in order to care for your complexion. The magazine evaluated wrinkle creams and Olay Regenerist beat out the more expensive department store brand La Prairie, in terms of performance.

Britons are queuing up at Boots, a popular UK pharmacy chain, to purchase a new antiaging cream that scientists claim is the first clinically tested over the counter cosmetic proven to reduce wrinkles. American dermatologists said the study confirmed what they already knew about the active ingredient, a derivative of vitamin A, found in Boots No 7 Protect & Perfect Intense Beauty Serum, which has long been known to reduce wrinkles and is already found in several over the counter products sold in the United States.

Mar 18, 2009, Synthesizing The Most Natural Of All Skin Creams

Even after nine months soaking in the womb, the skin of a newborn baby is smooth, unlike when an adult soaks in the bath. While occupying a watery, warm environment, the newborn manages to develop a skin fully equipped to protect it in a cold, dry and bacteria infected world. A protective cream called Vernix caseosa (VC), which covers the fetus and the newborn, aids in the growth of skin both before and after birth. VC provides waterproofing in utero, allowing skin to grow in wet conditions, while after birth it hydrates and cleanses, even healing when applied to ulcers. Prof. Joke Bouwstra, a specialist in the skin barrier and its synthesis at Leiden University, and her colleague Robert Ribmann set out to study VC in detail and has produced a synthetic version of this natural buttery ointment which shows the same structure and unique properties.
