Homemade Skin Care Recipes

The best homemade skin care recipes are simple, basic creams that can be made with ingredients found in your local grocery and health food stores.

More complex recipes that include emulsifying waxes, preservatives and other specialty ingredients can be attempted with some trial and error using the basics. While a preservative may be needed for large batches to keep them from molding, when making small personal sized batches, a preservative will not be necessary as long as the cream is kept refrigerated and used up within a month or two.

Solid lotion bars and sticks do not require emulsifiers or preservatives since there is no blending of water and oils in these homemade cosmetics recipes. Once familiar with the recipe and process, it is possible to add essential oils, vitamin oils and a variety of other ingredients for specific needs, such as dry winter skin, or lighter blends for summer.

Equipment Needed

Start with clean equipment, and sterile containers or mold for bars. These will include:

  • Small Jars - Baby food jars work well for this, or small resealable plastic containers can be substituted. Sterilize by wiping with rubbing alcohol on a paper towel.
  • Small Pot and Large Pot - To melt the ingredients in, using a double boiler method of placing the small pot inside a larger pot with hot, not boiling, water. The water in the larger pot should cover up to only half of the smaller pot to avoid water getting into the oils.
  • Kitchen Scale - To weigh the ingredients to be used.
  • Large Stainless Steel or Wooden Spoon - To stir the ingredients as they are melted together.
  • Mold - This is for lotion bars, where a solid lotion is poured in to cool, then wrapped in plastic or placed in plastic bags to keep. This can be a long plastic container, or even a cardboard box lined with wax paper, taped down on the outside.

Using Oil Capsules

To create a cream or lotion bar that is a home remedy for wrinkles, adding three to five capsules of Vitamin E oil, or Oil Of Evening Primrose as these are reputed to have regenerative properties and have been known to help renew skin cells and reverse some damage done by time and the elements. To add these to your skin care recipes, simply pierce the gel capsules with a sterilized needle or pin, and squeeze the oil into the mixture as it is being blended.

Simple Dry Skin Cream- this is one of the easier homemade skin care recipes to start with.

  • Two ounces Cocoa Butter
  • Two ounces Shea Butter
  • Two ounces Avocado Oil
  • Melt the Shea and Cocoa butters together in a double boiler, using simmering, not boiling water. Stir in the Avocado oil, remove from larger pot and cool slightly before pouring into containers. When completely cooled, put lids and labels on the containers, refrigerate when not in use. To keep bacteria from forming, wash hands before using.
